David Guthrie was born in New York City, lived in the Bronx and Harlem. His mother was a NYC Police Sergeant. He first came to Faith Mission when the day room was half day room/half office when Pete Smith, former Executive Director, was here and has used our services off and on through the years. He volunteers down at a local family restaurant almost every day.
David and his case manager, Kyle Guthrie, have became close over the years because of the same last name. One day, David and Kyle looked on Google Earth Maps one day and searched for David’s neighborhood as a child and teenager. It has changed a lot since that time period. Ever since that day, David refers to Kyle as “cousin” out of endearment.
When Kyle became Case Manager in June, he placed David on an ISP (Individual Service Plan), and asked him what his needs and goals are. “I need to go to New York and get my birth certificate so I can get an ID card, I’ve never had that.” David stated. Kyle let him know that he could get his birth certificate without even going to New York City. “Make it happen!” David stated excitedly.
A couple of weeks go by and Kyle calls David into his office and told him, “I got something for you.” David asked him what the surprise was and Kyle handed him an envelope. He was shocked. His first words were, “Come here let me give you a kiss!” Kyle laughed and said he could have a hug. David’s next steps on his ISP were to obtain a Texas ID and apply for housing. With the help of Kyle, David has an appointment with Texas DPS to get his driver’s license and has a housing appointment with the Wichita Falls Housing Authority this month so that he can get his own place with his name on the lease.
