Overview

In today’s challenging world, homelessness remains a persistent issue affecting communities across the nation.  At Wichita Falls Faith Mission, we believe that “Every Person has a Story, and Every Story Matters to God.”  Our vision is to “Eliminate Homelessness,” our mission is “To provide Christ-centered programs and services that lead the homeless and addicted toward self-sufficiency.”  Through our faith-based approach and the support of our community, we’re making significant strides in transforming lives and offering hope to those who need it most.

The Crucial Role of Faith-Based Organizations

In 2017, a Baylor University report titled, ASSESSING THE FAITH-BASED RESPONSE TO HOMELESSNESS IN AMERICA: FINDINGS FROM ELEVEN CITIES have shed light on the vital role that Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) play in addressing homelessness:

  • Nearly 60% of emergency shelter beds are provided through faith-based organizations, serving as a critical safety net for those in need.
  • FBOs often see homelessness not just as a lack of housing but as a symptom of deeper relational issues. As one FBO service provider noted, “People don’t become homeless when they run out of money, at least not right away.  They become homeless when they run out of relationships.”
  • Faith-based homeless ministries are at the forefront of program innovation and organizational transformation, improving outcomes for homeless individuals and families.
  • Housing First policies, while important, don’t always effectively engage with Faith-Based Organizations, especially congregation-based efforts that do not seek federal funding.
  • Many FBOs serving homeless men and women, particularly those struggling with addictions, operate “under the radar” and are not included in official HUD counts or statistics.

We at Wichita Falls Faith Mission have witnessed the truth behind these findings firsthand.  Our Christ-centered approach addresses the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness and the underlying spiritual and relational aspects that contribute to their situation.

 Our Comprehensive Approach to Homelessness

 Emergency Shelter Services

We operate two shelters to meet the diverse needs of our community:

  1. Faith Mission for men
  2. Faith Refuge for women and children

Both facilities offer emergency shelter services, including:

  • Beds for temporary shelter
  • Shower facilities
  • Nutritious meals

Our shelters provide a safe haven for those in crisis, offering physical comfort and a supportive environment where individuals can begin their journey toward self-sufficiency.

Faith Mission – A Refuge for Men

Faith Mission is more than just a place to sleep.  It offers a structured environment where men can find stability and support.  The shelter features:

  • Two separate dormitories:
    • One for men needing temporary shelter
    • Another for students in the addiction recovery program
  • Common areas for community building and support
  • Access to case management services
  • Opportunities for spiritual growth and counseling

Case Management: A Path to Self-Sufficiency

Our dedicated case managers work closely with clients to develop Individualized Service Plans (ISPs).  These plans are tailored to each person’s unique needs and circumstances and address short-term and long-term goals.  Case managers meet with clients every 7-10 days to monitor progress and provide ongoing support.

ISPs may include:

  • Short-term assistance (e.g., bus passes, immediate medical care)
  • Long-term support (e.g., employment searching, housing placement, legal issue resolution)
  • Spiritual counseling and guidance
  • Educational and skill-building opportunities
  • Referrals to partner organizations for specialized services

Through this personalized approach, we help individuals navigate the complex journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency.  Our case managers act as advocates, mentors, and support systems, ensuring each client has the resources and encouragement needed to succeed.

Mobile Outreach: Bringing Hope to the Streets

Our Mobile Outreach program extends our reach beyond our shelter walls.  This innovative service is designed to connect with individuals who may be hesitant to seek help or are unaware of available resources.  The program:

  • Helps individuals committed to leaving the streets
  • Facilitates transportation from outreach sites to our shelters
  • Assists with essential documentation (e.g., social security cards, birth certificates)
  • Connects individuals with other helpful agencies
  • Provides water, snacks, hygiene products, and seasonal items to those living on the streets
  • Offers immediate crisis intervention and support
  • Builds trust with the homeless community through consistent presence and care

By meeting people where they are, we can build trust and offer a lifeline to those who might otherwise remain isolated.  Our mobile outreach team is often the first point of contact for many individuals, serving as a bridge between life on the streets and the path to recovery and self-sufficiency.

 Clothing Ministry: Restoring Dignity

Our Clothing Ministry is more than just providing garments; it’s about restoring dignity and self-esteem.  Through this service, we offer:

  • Free clothing and shoes for men, women, and children
  • Bedding and household items
  • Access to clean, appropriate attire for job interviews, work, and daily life
  • Seasonal items such as coats, gloves, and boots
  • Personal care items and toiletries

This ministry, supported by the generosity of our community, plays a crucial role in helping individuals feel confident and prepared as they work toward self-sufficiency.  By providing clean, well-fitting clothing, we help our clients make positive first impressions in job interviews, feel comfortable in social situations, and maintain their health and well-being.

 Chapel Services: Nurturing Spiritual Growth

At the heart of our Christ-centered approach are our regular chapel services.  These gatherings provide:

  • A welcoming and compassionate space for spiritual support
  • Regular times for worship, prayer, and reflection
  • Messages of hope and encouragement
  • Opportunities for community building among guests
  • Spiritual counseling and guidance

Our chapel services are vital to our mission.  They remind each person that they are valued and that their story matters to God.  While participation is voluntary, many find that these services offer comfort, hope, and a sense of purpose as they navigate their journey toward recovery and self-sufficiency.

Temporary Outreach Services: Addressing Immediate Needs

In addition to our core programs, we offer temporary outreach services that address both immediate needs and long-term well-being:

  • SNAP Benefits Application Assistance: In partnership with the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank, we help clients apply for vital food assistance.
  • Health Services: We offer free flu shots, COVID-19 vaccinations, and HIV screenings to promote health and safety within our community.
  • Job Fairs: We collaborate with the Texas Workforce Commission to host job fairs, connecting clients with employment opportunities that support their path toward self-sufficiency.
  • Educational Workshops: We provide workshops on financial literacy, health and wellness, and life skills.

These services complement our long-term programs, ensuring that our clients have access to a full range of resources to support their journey out of homelessness.

The New Beginnings Recovery Program: A Holistic Approach to Addiction

Recognizing the often-intertwined nature of homelessness and addiction, we offer the New Beginnings Recovery Program.  This 13-month residential program is designed to break the cycle of addiction and equip participants for successful reintegration into the workforce.

The program consists of three comprehensive levels:

Level I: Orientation

This initial phase focuses on addressing the unique and immediate needs of new students:

  • Enrollment in indigent medical care, psychiatric treatment, dental, and vision care
  • Obtaining necessary clothing and personal items
  • In-house GED classes for those without a high school diploma
  • Replacement of essential documents (IDs, social security cards)
  • Assistance with legal issues, including warrant resolution and child support matters

Level II: Addiction Recovery

The core of the program focuses on spiritual transformation and breaking addiction cycles:

  • Learning to use the power of God and prayer in recovery
  • Emphasis on renewing the mind through biblical teachings
  • Group Bible Study and counseling sessions
  • Relapse prevention education
  • Development of healthy coping mechanisms

 Level III: Job Readiness

This final phase prepares participants for employment and independent living:

  • Participation in paid work tracks to relearn job skills
  • Focus on punctuality, reliability, teamwork, and safety
  • Financial management education, including budgeting and tithing
  • Resume building and interview skills training
  • Job placement assistance

Through this comprehensive approach, we’ve seen countless lives transformed, with individuals finding not just sobriety but purpose and direction through faith.

Transitional Supportive Housing

For graduates of the New Beginnings Program, we offer transitional supportive housing:

  • Short-term shelter for independent living (up to one year)
  • A sober living environment with other program graduates
  • Resident manager support
  • Reduced rental rates to facilitate saving
  • Focus on developing financial management and relational skills

This transitional phase helps solidify the gains made during the program and supports a smoother transition to fully independent living.

 The Impact of Faith-Based Programs

The effectiveness of faith-based programs like ours is evident in both individual stories and broader statistics.  Studies have shown that successful participants from FBO Residential Recovery and Job Readiness programs generate an estimated $119 million in taxpayer savings during the three years following program exit.

These savings reflect financial benefits and the profound personal transformations that occur when individuals find hope, support, and a path to self-sufficiency through faith-based initiatives.  The impact extends beyond the individuals served, positively affecting families, communities, and society.

Community Support: The Backbone of Our Mission

At Wichita Falls Faith Mission, we’re deeply grateful for the support of our community.  All our services are provided free of charge, made possible by the generosity of:

  • Individuals who donate time, money, and resources
  • Local churches and religious groups
  • Foundations that provide grants and funding
  • Businesses that offer financial support and job opportunities
  • Other organizations that partner with us in various capacities

This community support allows us to continue our mission, touching lives and offering hope to those who need it most.  It’s a testament to the power of collective action and the strength of a community united in the goal of helping its most vulnerable members.

 Challenges and Future Directions

While we’ve made significant progress, we recognize that there are still challenges ahead:

  • Increasing need for services due to economic pressures and social issues
  • Limited resources and funding to meet growing demands
  • Complexity of addressing long-term homelessness and chronic addiction
  • Need for greater coordination among various service providers and government agencies

As we look to the future, we’re committed to:

  • Expanding our capacity to serve more individuals and families
  • Enhancing our programs based on evidence-based practices and client feedback
  • Strengthening partnerships with other organizations to provide comprehensive care
  • Advocating for policies that support the work of faith-based organizations in addressing homelessness
