In the 80’s and 90’s, a book series became popular called “Choose Your Own Adventure.”  The books were designed for a 7- to 14-year-old audience. The reader—takes on a role relevant to the adventure, such as a private investigator, mountain climber, race-car driver, doctor, or spy.

Throughout the book, the reader faces two or three options, each of which leads to further pages and further options, and so on until they arrive at one of the many story endings.    Some of the books had 100’s of options and dozens of endings.

While the reader was only playing the role of a fictitious character, the relationship between choices and consequences was undeniable.  However, in a book, they could always turn to the end and reveal the results of their choices.  Not very true to life.

In the book, if you don’t like the ending, then you could go back and make another choice.  Unfortunately, no one, including the men and women we serve at our two shelters can change their past choices to get a better ending.  That’s not the way it works.

However, we don’t have to be just a sum of all our choices.  God can redeem any past.  He can help with shame, loss and regret.  He can give us a new path and a new life.  We’ve seem it happen many times. Romans 8:28 says, “We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

We believe that every person has a story and that God isn’t finished with them yet.  It is our greatest privilege to help those we serve choose God’s adventure for their lives … starting today.
