This has been graduation week at our two shelters.  My favorite week of the month.  It is always inspiring to hear where God has brought them to and just how far the men and women have come in their journeys.

One of the men shared how this program was the first thing he had ever finished in his life.  I am always amazed that many people grow up without much of the guidance and support I had.  And yet, God meets them where they are and accomplishes His plan in their lives.

One thing that stood out for me this time was how big a role brotherhood and sisterhood plays in their journeys.  In their speeches, they spent a lot of time talking about the relationships they had built and the support they had received from the fellow programmers.

It reminded me of the passage in Hebrews 10:24-25.

“Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking the assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.”

So much of what we do that is good in this life is done together with someone else.  We need each other, because where I am weak, my brother is strong.  Or when I am down, there is always someone around to pick me up.

Doing life together, whether it is in a recovery program or just family or at work can bring about victories we could never accomplish by ourselves.

I’m thankful that God has created us this way.  My prayer for myself and all of us is that we will avail ourselves to those brotherhood and sisterhood opportunities.

A cord of three strands is not easily torn apart.
