We’ve been studying the 23rd Psalm in chapel at Faith Refuge. The imagery of the shepherd and their sheep is so rich and applicable. But when you get to verse 5, David seems to change the metaphor slightly when he says, “You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies.”
When I asked the ladies what comes to mind when you think about a prepared table, their responses rang out immediately from everywhere in the room.
Safety
Faithfulness
He pursues me.
He provides for me.
He protects me.
He is for me.
Their minds went immediately to the preparer and not to the table. Isn’t it amazing to think that God Himself has prepared a table for us. He’s the host. And can you imagine what that table must look like. The Apostle Paul couldn’t. He ended his prayer for the church at Ephesus this way, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
Every time I’m around the men and women at our shelters, I’m reminded of how blessed I am.
But on this day, I was reminded of how great our God is. How He pursues us and desires to have a relationship with us. I was brought back to the truth that He really is all I need.
Someone once said, “You’ll never know God is all you need until God is all you have.” The ladies at Faith Refuge reminded me of that. In my self-sufficiency, I can sometimes forget that I’m not god, He is … and that will never change.
On the other side of the valley of the shadow of death is a table … prepared by God … just for you.
