I’ve always been fascinated by teamwork. Growing up, I played baseball and I loved the idea of working together to play good defense or score runs. In some cases, it just seemed to click. Sometimes, there is just a chemistry that causes some teams to work together better than others.
Also, good teams are created by a common cause. Everyone rowing in the same direction. And its more than just believing in the cause, but it is selling out to it.
The third element to good teams is support and encouragement for one another. Having each other’s back. This is many times the most attractive aspect of a team.
The best example of a team, in my opinion, is the Church. All the elements we already talked about are present … chemistry, a common cause and support and encouragement. Or should I say, they should be present in the Church.
The way God designed the church is best described in Romans 12 as a body. In chapter 12 verse 5 it says, “so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another.” The Apostle Paul uses the same metaphor to the Church at Corinth and told them, “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.” In the Church, we are on Christ’s team.
We all have a role to play. At Wichita Falls Faith Mission, we are a part of that body. We support the common cause of the Church by sharing the Gospel and providing for the needy. We don’t do this for the church, we do it as the church.
We have volunteers from local churches that help daily at our shelters and our stores. Everyone pitches in with different skills, passions, and experiences to achieve the common goal. As a result, the church is at work, lives are changed, and God is glorified.
Everyone wants to play for a winning team and according to Jesus, the Church is a winner. He said of His Church, “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” As believers, the choice is ours. Will we be on the team or in the stands. The church doesn’t need fans, it needs players. How about you?
