Have you ever seen an image of a snowflake under a microscope? The intricate design seems to be flawless. They each have 6 sides and they say no two are alike. That is amazing to me considering how many of them it takes to cover the ground. Scientists say there could be as many as a billion of them in one cubic foot.
As beautiful as they are, when they all get together, they can cause a lot of problems, especially in Texas. From bumper car streets to skating rink sidewalks, these little miracles of nature can paralyze an entire city or state.
Of course, that isn’t their intent. They are just doing what they are told. God, being in control of all things, including the weather, tells them when and where to go and they obey. Each beautiful snowflake floats to the ground and joins billions of others as they fascinate us with their beauty.
Imagine what it would be like if we as believers joined our hearts in the same way. Everyone is different, but under the control of God, a mighty force able to bring about change in the world.
However, unlike snowflakes, the Bible doesn’t describe our hearts as beautiful or even obedient. In fact, Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” When Jeremiah says, “desperately wicked” he is saying our hearts are incurable or terminal. We can’t fix them on our own. So how can we as believers join our desperately wicked hearts for something good? Here is the message Jeremiah later delivered from God about that. “For this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord: “I will put My law within them and write it on their heart; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” Jeremiah 31:33
Can you imagine a drift of God’s people, hearts under His control going into this world? The Bible has a word for that. In the original language of the New Testament, it was “ecclesia”, the church. But as believers, we must realize that our power originates with God, and it is manifested when our hearts are under His control. The secret isn’t in sheer numbers, but rather in obedience.
