“They just need to get a job!” I’ve heard some say this about the homeless in our community, and I must say that I understand how someone could come to this conclusion. From the perspective of someone who has worked hard all their lives and taken responsibility for themselves, it does seem that simple. Believe me, I’ve seen my share of unmotivated men and women who are content to live on the dole. Yes, there are plenty who have made bad choices and caused their circumstances. Their physical and mental health are products of years of their own neglect and abuse. Alcohol and drugs have become their reason to live in many cases. Some might say, it seems hopeless.
At Faith Mission and Faith Refuge, this is what we call, “Their Story.” Everyone has one. And the way we see it, listening is the key to change.
From the practical side, listening is just the beginning. Providing opportunities and resources have to follow. From their lowest point, many are not capable of creating their own opportunities. This is where relationships enter the picture. As I’ve said before, homelessness isn’t caused by the lack of employment, housing and money alone. Homelessness is caused by a lack of relationships.
Through the building of relationships, we are able to encourage and challenge many of our clients to dream again. They begin to believe that they are capable and worth something. Once they are thinking clearly again, the simplest things to you and I, become possibilities for them again. Waking up to an alarm clock, making their bed, getting dressed for work, showing up on time. These are the things they learn in our job readiness programs.
We can’t change their story, but we can help them turn the page and write new chapters. We believe that our past doesn’t have to define us but it can direct us. It is about a change of thinking or as Romans 12:2 says, being “transformed by the renewing of the mind.” This all happens in Christ as He becomes the Lord of our lives and His Word becomes our power source.
Do they need a job? Yes! Do they need a home? Yes! Do they need to stop drinking? Yes! But most of all, they, including all of us need relationships. Especially with Jesus.
